As we embrace the possibilities of a brand-new year, GC Angels takes a moment to reflect on how we closed out 2024. December is often a tale of two seasons in venture capital: a whirlwind of deal activity for some and a welcome pause for others to celebrate the festive season. For GC Angels, it was a balance of both—pushing deals forward while still finding time to celebrate.
Deals, Diligence, and Festive Cheer
December saw us driving progress on three deals heading into diligence and preparing two others for completion in early 2025. This momentum reflects our commitment to supporting Greater Manchester’s innovative businesses. But it wasn’t all work—our team also enjoyed some festive highlights, starting with the Baltic Ventures Accelerator Xmas Investor Dinner in Liverpool.
At this inspiring event, we were treated to 11 exceptional elevator pitches from the accelerator’s founders. Delivering a short, impactful pitch is no small feat—it requires a deep understanding of both the business and the audience, backed by hours of practice. Congratulations to the founders and kudos to Claire Lewis and Mo Aldalou for hosting such a stellar evening!
Engaging with Founders and Building Relationships
The energy continued as we spoke with another group of innovative founders at the CPI Health Innovation Catalyst Investor Panel, thanks to Ian Smith and Damian from CPI NW. Later, we attended the Tech Climbers GM List Reveal, celebrating Greater Manchester’s standout tech companies. This event marked the beginning of a promising partnership between GC Angels and Tech Climbers, setting the stage for exciting collaborations in 2025.
Our December journey also included the NW Hydrogen Innovation Showcase, hosted by Sustainable Ventures, where we welcomed them to the Greater Manchester and Northwest ecosystem. We’re thrilled to forge new connections that align with our mission to champion sustainable and innovative businesses.
Collaborating with Our Ecosystem
Internally, we are immensely grateful to our colleagues at GM Business Growth Hub, including Janine Smith, Ian S Dixon, Heather Waters, and Adam Clayton, for their steadfast support throughout the year. Initiatives such as RAISE and GM ASCEND, led by the incredible Kellie Noon, have been pivotal in fostering growth and innovation in our region.
Additionally, we were honoured to speak at the Growth Hub’s all-staff Christmas meeting, reflecting on a year of impactful collaboration and shared successes.
Advanced Manufacturing and New Opportunities
Our December activities wrapped up with the ZEBOX UK Advanced Manufacturing Day, where we spoke alongside Santiago Issa from GMCA. This event highlighted the GM ADVANCE Fund, an essential funding source for early-stage advanced manufacturing businesses. It also offers exciting co-investment opportunities, reinforcing our commitment to Greater Manchester’s cutting-edge industries.
Looking Ahead to 2025
The second half of December brought a quieter period, allowing us to focus on deal flow. We’re gearing up to close up to five deals in early 2025 and remain dedicated to ensuring that every GM-based founder knows they have access to pre-seed equity funding.
As we step into 2025, GC Angels is energised and ready to build on the foundations laid in 2024. Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we continue to support the growth and innovation of businesses across Greater Manchester.
